Birds at Kandez

At Kandez Holiday Home, we are fortunate to be located away from the busy trading centers, main roads and bars which makes it a peaceful, tranquil place to either relax or begin exploring the beauty of the pearl of Africa. Our hilly location and well manicured gardens make it easier for a large variety of birdlife to visit our premises.

Things to do in Entebbe

Entebbe city is located on a small peninsular in Lake Victoria around 35kms from the capital city of Uganda – Kampala. All major international flights come through Entebbe airport, however there is more to do here than just catch a flight. At Kandez Holiday Home, we can advise on the best places or service providers to book excursions around town. Please contact us if you would like more information.

Entebbe Botanical Gardens

Just a 10 minutes drive (or a 30 minutes walk) from Kandez Holiday Home are the Entebbe Botanical Gardens, a 40 hectare Oasis on the shores of Lake Victoria that was established in 1898, showcasing a diverse collection of tropical plants and offering a tranquil escape. The gardens are a haven for bird watchers with over 100 species of birds and also feature playful monkeys and scenic walking trails.

Search for the Shoebill Stork in Mabamba Swamp

The Mabamba Swamp on Lake Victoria in Entebbe is a renowned location for spotting the enigmatic shoebill stork. This vast wetland characterised by papyrus, water lilies, and other vegetation offers a unique location to observe these large, prehistoric-looking birds in their natural habitat. Shoebills are known for their patient hunting style, often standing still for extended periods before striking with incredible speed to catch their prey, primarily fish and frogs.

This is a half-day trip and can either be done in the morning (highly recommended) or in the afternoon.

Uganda Wildlife Education Center

The Entebbe Zoo, officially the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC), is a unique facility that combines a traditional zoo with an educational focus on wildlife conservation. It's located on the shores of Lake Victoria, near Entebbe International Airport. Originally founded to rehabilitate rescued or injured animals, it has evolved into a center that showcases Uganda's diverse wildlife and promotes education about their ecosystems and conservation efforts.
